Project 1a - Cory

Using a large image from the web I created the illusion that the lettering and the circle are magnifying the image, using a combination of several illustrator tools.  After placing the image into the art-board I duplicated it and made a slightly larger copy. I dragged the larger copy into the swatches panel to create a swatch out of the image then deleted the larger copy from the art-board. I then used the type tool to great the word art. By selecting the word art and clicking object > expand i transformed it into a regular vector object to make the next steps possible. While the word art is selected you replace the fill the the larger picture swatch. The swatch acts as a stationary object and the word art simply becomes a mask. I then used effects > stylize > inner glow to get the glowing blue look to try and give the illusion that the word art is glass. By repeating these steps for the circular shape i created an intractable illustrator file. In illustrator you can drag these objects across the art-board and it will appear as through it is magnifying everything underneath it.

The overall concept is simple. The word magnify "Magnifies" the city below.

  1. Cory, this is "Magnificent". That's Central Park! Your palette, technique, and the concept are exquisite. You obviously have an expert knowledge of Illustrator. And your choice of subject matter should be applauded. (A New Yorker here, LOL.) My only critique would be, and this is just a personal observation: I think that if the circle (the magnifying glass) had maybe zoomed in 2x or 3x more, that would have REALLY added some punch to the design. Otherwise, freaking great job man!

  2. This is really neat, I agree with Daniel something more could be done with the magnifying glass at the bottom to really get that magnifying effect across.

  3. At fist I thought that the empty spot in the left bottom corner is to empty, but the design still works because of the radial background, which moves eyes around the picture frame. But, on the other hand, the bg becoming a little problem on its own, as it's attract more attention than the word itself with its brightness. Perhaps making it black and white and colored under the text and the glass would make it work better. Still, it's a very good design.

  4. Okay I love this! It's a very very cool design and the way you put the font on there only makes it look better. I, personally, would have but the bubble at the center just to make it a bit more balanced, but I don't think having it to the right really takes too much from the design. Very cool idea!

  5. This is awesome. Pretty creative, I like the way you played around with the letters to make them look like they're some kind of magnified lens.
