My word for the "Letter Forms" assignment was Nope. To create this design I used several techniques.
First of all, I created a rectangle and rotated it. Using the selection tool and holding 'Alt' key, I copied the rectangle and placed it behind the first one, rotating it some more. To create the drop shadow effect I copied the rectangles again, made them half-transparent and placed them under the yellow rectangles. Of course, I could simply use "drop shadow" effect, but it wouldn't do what I wanted it to do, i.e. it would make shadow at the same distance from every object and I needed it to be smaller at the point where two rectangles are crossing each-other. That is why I simply added extra anchor points on the rectangle under the yellow one and, using the direct selection tool, made the shadow shorter on the crossing point. After that, I created a path parallel to my rectangle and used it to type my word, after which I adjusted the word's kerning to make the word shorter, so I was able to copy it three more times, and also because it looked better this way. For the background I found an image of an old wall and transformed it into vector image. I intentionally tried to find an image which was heavier on the opposite corner of the composition to balance the bright yellow color.
The word itself comes from the internet culture and holds the meaning of the highest level of denial or disagreement. I chose this word because the morning before the class, I saw a shirt which only had this word printed on it, and I started to ponder about getting one, and the word sort of stuck in my head (not because that was what I thought about the assignment). I thought that the yellow tape was a good concept as both are associated with something similar. I found a font used on yellow tapes (Futura Cond Med.) and used it to type my word.

The first variant of my name became one of those projects on which no matter how long you work, you can't quite make it good enough. I spend something like over eight hours on it, making many versions and still don't like it.
The second variant of my name was an easy part. I simply picked a random "elegant" looking font, then I transformed every letter into different vector objects to change their placing and give them different color or clipping mask so it looked "pompous". And finally I did nothing else to make the design look "slapdash/negligent."

The "Nope" one cracks me up! It totally conveys the intent of the yellow tape and they go together very nicely. The high contrast in the yellow vs. the B&W are very interesting as well- it really grabs your eyes. (:
ReplyDeleteI like the dragon behind the name, I think it looks great and is very well put together. The work you put in shows!
The girly-girl, cheetah girl, opposite is great too. I get the antonyms out of that one. Great job!
I really love the combination of black and yellow so I automatically liked your "Nope" project. Your name ones are pretty cool too. Looks like you're on the creative side!
ReplyDeleteNatalia,
ReplyDelete8hrs! wow, great job though. I seen your process for the dragon and that's impressive. Your opposites are easily seen and that is a thumbs up to your images.
I enjoy all the images you produced out of these projects. The caution tape turned out really cool. Although I think maybe there could have been a better word used since "nope" is more of a slang than literal word. Obviously "caution" would not have been the way to go seeing it is too simple so I like how you were thinking. As far as the names go, they both turned out great. The sassy looking pink and animal print name and then a mythical, dream-like dragon in the stars is really awsome. good job
ReplyDeleteNOPE is a wonderful translation of the project. The background gives the illusion of a face in the lower right corner . . . can you see it?
ReplyDeleteThe first "Natalia" is very cool. I love the dragon image. The second one is playful, perhaps a little simple but, I guess that was the point.
The nope design is really cool the placement of where you out the tape going across makes for a nice composition. Only thing you might try is putting the word nope on the other piece of tape as well to keep it consistent! other then that its awesome!
ReplyDeleteYour name with the dragon came out nice as well the colors look awesome on it ! I think you could make the colors go all the way past your name and it would look cool too! nice work!
I really like the "nope" project, it's very well done. I can see where you were going with the names too, although in the last one the first two letters kind of blur together and look like an "M" --I had to look at it closer to see that the letters were just overlapping.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy the differences between the names, rather funny
ReplyDeleteYour choice of color is perfect. I think you should check out the trace tool for your drawn art work.
ReplyDeleteNot a hard NO, just a playful nope, not happening, your not coming in here. Great job.
