Project 1 - Letter Forms

This project really was a challenge for me; I'm not very good at using text, though it does truly interest me. As far as what I did for my process, it was fairly simple- using the Dafont resource that was given to us, I found a font that I deemed acceptable (called Lazy Sans) and downloaded it to my personal computer for use. I wanted it to be a thick, bold font as to convey a space where the eyes would be on a face. I liked the lines that it had around the edges of the font, it looked like worry lines or wrinkles to me- adding another small touch of a human characteristic- I tried to continue this small detail in the other parts of the piece. I used the stroke, curve, and direct selection tool for the lines that convey the frown and eyebrows. For the tear drops I used the pen tool (making sure all connections were set to "smooth") and used the direct selection tool to fit the anchor points how I wanted them.

The entire idea was to create the illusion of the expression that the word usually conveys. When someone is sad you'd usually think of a frowny face and some tears if someone’s really feeling the sadness. Using that idea I tried to create a frown with the curve tool, and some sad eyebrows, as well as some tear drops to show a sad face. In place of where the eyes would be I used the word itself as a place holder. It's like a giant emoticon.

I had a bit more fun with this one simply because of how ridiculous it was. The tools I used in this were the text tool, "place", transform, copy, paste, reflect, stroke, and fill. I also created my own custom gradient for the background to try and make it as awful looking as possible and possibly clash with the images and font I placed on top of it. For the font I used Comic Sans, and searched the Internet for the images placed on top. It was a lot of moving stuff around, scaling objects to fit on the art board how I saw fit and quite frankly trying to make it look as ugly as possible.

And truly that was the concept- I am a huge fan of design and while I might not be at the level of creating great design myself- that's the goal in the end. To create something that was the opposite of me I wanted to create the idea of just AWFUL design- using my personal least favorite font, the equivalent of clip art for the Internet Explorer icon, and the worst color combos I could think of I tried to make it as unappealing as possible. I placed all the objects at angels and scattered them across the page to try and rid any sense of balance or symmetry. I used words like "swag" and "yolo" as well as Justin Bieber and IE because I can't stand them- they're about as far from my interests or likes as possible and hopefully will bring about the "antonyms" asked for in the assignment.

  1. Kasandra,

The Sad text image is great play on words. You really do have the sad face down pact. Your name visual is great also. It looks like it could be an embroidered patch. I enjoyed your explanation of your Opposite design and those are some awful words I agree. Great job.

  2. I like the effects you gave on the letters. They truly do look bummed out. Your name one is cool! Seems you like space! That last one is pretty funny. Looks like something you'd see on tumblr.

  3. I like the name in the constellation which i am guessing has something to do with your astrological sign up front. It was creative and made a good finished image. I am not sure what it being displayed with Justin and the explorer icons, other than you dislike Justin and you do not like the internet?

  4. The sad face is really cool though, good idea with it. Maybe though you could have aligned it so that the A sat lower representing a nose and the remaining letters stayed in place for the eyes!

  5. SAD is perfect! Those blue tears make me sad. :(
I enjoy looking at the first rendition of your name, it's like a Zodiac sign. I like that you used a gradient in the background of the second one but, it seems a little juvenile . . . maybe that was your intent?

  6. Love the sad design the turned out nice the small thin lines that you used around the text mouth and eyebrows really give it a nice effect. One idea to try maybe is to make the eyebrows smaller? Or even try taking them out all together and see what that looks like. awesome job!

  7. I really like the "sad" project. The last one really does look like "awful design" so you did a good job, in the sense that that was what you were going for.

  8. the antonym project made me laugh! it is so funny and rather creative.
The name plate image could be used in many things, my thoughts were the same as Chancey's, a nice embroidery patch. and in all honesty the sad one i find to be so cute, very nice

  9. Awesome designs! The sad one looks so good it made me smile! :) I like the way you used the clipping mask for your name going across the stars. The opposite image gives off you personality, I like it!

  11. This project made me really happy, even if the word you chose is 'sad'. I personally think that nothing is needed to be changed in the word's design itself, it's good as it is. I know there was some critique about the eyebrows, but I personally think that the eyebrows add some charm, making it more like 'angry sad' in the opposite of just 'sad'.
The first name is amazing. I love the idea, I love the execution of it. (I also love Doctor Who). The only thing I would change is moving letter N a little to the left, so it would be more centered between A and D, which would make the connecting lines between the letters more of a same length.
The second name design is hilarious! Just there was a possibility to make it even crazier. Why not to go all out-loud and add some Nicolas Cage pictures, some pictures of Nuttella, Crocs logo, and what else people of tumblt love to hate xD
    Still, I love your ideas!
